ISP-Week 1
Extension Task- GRFP film analysis
I think that this scene is an important turning point in Katniss’s characters survival as it shows the purpose which is intended to make the audience feel worry and panic as well as sympathy for her survival while she is her disorientated state.
In this, I believe that the use of natural lighting is very important as it gives a more realistic atmosphere to the scene as well as the camera level changing throughout the whole of the sequence. Within the cinematography of the camera we experience multiple points of view, including the characters, the audiences and multiple perspectives of what’s happening through the use of close up shots, long shots and extreme close ups, giving more of an impression of the confused and alarmed emotion the character is experiencing. This happens as the camera moves between Katniss’ movements and those asleep on the floor, emphasising the anticipation as if it were a life or death situation. We also see the camera angles change more frequently as the hallucination progresses showing the character stumbling, giving the impression of dizziness. I also think another aspect of this scene that stands out is the sound and editing. In this scene there is no dialogue, however diegetic sounds of breathing and non-diegetic sounds have been edited to create effect and mimic what Katniss is feeling. However, at the beginning you hear Foley sounds of nature firstly setting the scene as quiet and peaceful which later increases into tension music building in volume and pitch. As well as this the buzzing of wasps in the scene becomes more violent as the sequence progresses, acting as a warning to the audience and building on apprehension. The scene has been edited not only to show the disorientation of the character but to also make the audience feel that same agitation and suspense when watching. The camera uses different effects like repeating, blurring and slowing certain parts down. The effect of this is to increase tension and the emotional connection between the character and the audience. Included in the Mes-en-scene of the sequence the Main character is shown in a tree to signify the higher importance which then gives her character more attention whilst the other characters lie on the floor asleep. In addition to that is shown on the set I believe the forest/trees act as a maze or obstacle for the character to overcome which can also be a visual metaphor for what she is feeling.
