Component 3

Component 3: Short sequence :

Summary:

My film sequence genre for component-three is dystopian in which the sequence shows the typical conventions of the dystopian genre. An example I have used is that the citizens of society being under constant surveillance and cut off from the outside world as well as including characteristics such as the government being perceived as the perfect figurehead and the citizens freedom being banned and restricted. The style of my film is quick paced and towards the start includes some action e.g running through the forest. However, in the second half slows down as the character of Jess is being interrogated. I have intended some of my camera shots to use high, wide-angled lenses to imitate the feel of a security camera. The intended target audience for this film is for young adults as we are shown the sequence from the character of Jess’s point of view. This means that it is more relatable for the audience and they are therefore sympathetic towards the characters. As well as the film highlighting some political and social issues I believe are relevant in current day government, politics and society.

Influence:

In terms of narrative in my short film, my sequence includes two scenes and two different locations. I have chosen to do this to show two opposing environments such as the open forest to suggest freedom and on the other hand a small interrogation room to highlight imprisonment. I chose this within the narrative to further emphasising the divide between people’s rights and the inequality in the idealised perfect utopia that is thought to be by the government. An influence I have taken inspiration from in terms of visuals within my sequence is by using a handheld camera when filming from the main character of Jess’s point of view. This will increase emotional intensity and align the audience with Jess. A similar camera angle was used in the film ‘Moon’ as we are continuously aligned with the new Sam and therefore sympathise more with that certain character. In terms of audio I have taken influence from the film ‘under the skin’ by non-diegetic background music to build tension as well as using the surrounding diegetic sounds of nature within the forest and close sonic perspective to create a sense of realism and immerse the audience in the character’s world.
