Strike: Middle sequence- analysis notes:
Explore how film form devices are used to convey messages in the film you have studied
Film form is used to convey political ideology in the silent film ‘Strike’ through propaganda in order to promote the unity of the working class and address the masses and proletariat. Firstly in regards to the middle sequence, intellectual montage editing is used to contrast the image of the of the working class being chased and intimidated by horses, in comparison to the visual metaphor of the capitalists squeezing a lemon. This acts as a visual metaphor as it is symbolic of their attempts at crushing the revolution and shows how much power and control they have in the palm of their hands. In terms of performance, we see an exaggerated and theatrical performance as the characters squeeze the lemon showing them to be menacing and threatening. This highlights the power dynamic between those in a higher position of power and authority and the working class. The capitalists as appear as caricatures, linking to the expressionistic style of soviet cinema and establishing the binary oppositions of the rich and wealthy vs the supressed working class.
Another way in which film form devices are used to convey a message is through mise en scene. For example in the middle sequence the capitalists use the needs of the working class to wipe their shoes, inferring how the working class are treated poorly and are used by those with higher power to do their dirty work. This used dramatic irony as the title cards refer to the workers’ list of demands using the dialogue ‘utmost care’ and ‘considered’, juxtaposing the reality that the masses experienced in real time. This acts as a criticism towards capitalism and wealth, promoting the Communist ideology of the unity and organisation of the workers and the masses.
- Neo-classical architecture- symbolises wealth and aristocratic history of Russia
- Police are higher on horses- higher status and more power visually and metaphorically
- Longshot low angle shot of stairs- shows position of power and wealth- distances the viewer looking up at the stairs- power structure/ hierarchal power
- Harsh and directional off-screen lighting to create shadows and silhouettes- the light tracks the butler in corridor/ stairs
